The Landmine Monitor has reported on past deaths and injuries of elephants due to landmines on Myanmar/Burma’s borders with both Bangladesh and Thailand.

On 21 November, Bangladeshi authorities reported the death of another elephant due to landmines laid by Myanmar forces on its joint border with Bangladesh. Bangladesh joined the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty which bans use of the weapon.

Bangladeshi Divisional Forest Officer of Lama Forest Division Md Kamal Uddin said: “The giant mammal sustained injuries Monday night after stepping on a landmine in the no-man’s land along Naikhongchari border.” which is in Bandarban district.
