Mizzima: Burma representative attends landmine meeting in Cambodia, Thea Forbes, 21 September 2011

The Eleventh Meeting of States Parties to the Mine Ban Treaty will take place in Cambodia in late November 2011. This is the first time the inter-governmental meeting will be held in SEAsia since 2003 when Thailand hosted the Fifth Meeting on the MBT.

Cambodia had pledged to engage all ASEAN states prior to the meeting, including Myanmar/Burma. The attendance at the meeting by Myanmar/Burma is significant, however it did not send any representation from Nyi Pyi Taw, and provided a Third Secretary from its local mission in Phnom Penh. The person did not speak and only attended one session before leaving, suggesting that the issue does not yet have a high priority.
