US to provide Myanmar with 3mil for demining, Nan Tin Htwe, Monday, Myanmar Times, 25 March 2013

The US Dept. of State’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilisation Operations will provide US$3 million to Myanmar for landmine clearing projects. Rick Barton, Assistant Secretary of the CSO states that this will support peace efforts and confidence-building between the government and ethnic groups.

Barton was reported to say that the demining work will begin in Kayah State but would later be extended to other affected areas, including Kachin and Shan State. The funding will assist organisations involved in demining work in suport of the ceasefire and peace processes. Barton was reported to have said that the Tatmadaw and armed ethnic groups be involved in “delicate, expensive and dangerous” demining work.
